This DVD is on the level of a public domain release (the serve of the box says “not authorized by Clokey Productions”), but after reading what people had to say about the “authorized” Gumby box space, fans are probably distinguished better served by this disc! These are decent transfers of the new cartoons; no music substitutions, no advise substitutions, objective the trusty thing. There are no opening or closing titles, so one cartoon sort of runs into the next. Quiet, not abominable at all for this ticket.

This and the Greatest Adventures DVD both include the very current audio Soundtrack including string based music (later replaced by a Synthesizer for the 80’s reruns) and the novel reveal recordings (Gumby’s swear is significantly higher pitched) . This and the Greatest Adventures DVD are the only DVDs out apt now with the fresh Soundtrack and perfectly compliment the “Kid Rhino”-released mega-pack.

There are several downsides however…

1. The narrate quality is not as profitable as the “Kid Rhino” release

2. There is a “GT” watermark in the bottom accurate corner of the veil all throughout the video. (invisible on white backgrounds)

3. It’s only 30 minutes long (but I guess that’s why it’s so cheap)

4. This DVD does NOT include the title sequences, but the Greatest Adventures DVD does.

Mysterious Island was always a common Harryhausen film of mine as a kid. The screenplay and direction (like those for The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and The Argonauts) is top notch. Director Cy Endfield has a solid cast and the pacing along with Bernard Herrmann’s classic pick up creates an eerie and, well, mysterious feeling for most of the movie. The stand out in the cast is, of course, the suited and under rated Herbert Lom as Captain Nemo. If you haven’t seen the film, I’d rather not spoil the third act of the film for you so won’t go into too distinguished detail.

The Civil War is tearing America apart. A puny group of Union soldiers and a reporter run a military prison during the seige of Richmond, Virginia. They also have a There’s a scouting balloon impartial outside the prison walls. As the attack rages, the prisoners elope in the balloon. They are washed up ashore on an uncharted island with a brewing volcano.

It’s not ordinary island (no surprise) though as they look a giant crab and later, giant bees, chickens and other creatures. They’re joined in their Robinson Crusoe adventure by a couple of women who are later washed ashore from a shipwreck. They soon stare the origin of the giant beasts and some execrable news about the volcano as well.

The cast gives a profitable performance. Gary Merrill (best known for All About Eve and broken-down husband of Betty Davis) and Michael Callan are the most recognizable faces. Callan was a regular in a number of movies and television shows as a supporting actor. Joan Greenwood also gives a convincing performance as well. Composed, the stand out here is the brooding performance as Herbert Lom. Lom always managed to raise the bar in any film he appeared in.

The screenplay (for those that are fervent) isn’t all that faithful to Verne’s recent. The basic premise is drawn from his unique.

The transfer is splendid obedient. I doubt with the multiple exposures faded as share of the visual effects that the film could stare remarkable better than this. Given the expend of traveling mattes, matte paintings and other optical effects the image is occasionally grainy and indistinct. There are also some minor issues with digital grain that carve up on occasion. This is usually due to compression issues. It’s not a great distraction though and you probably won’t gape it all that remarkable in most cases.

There’s also some analog artifacts as well but these are mostly in the war sequence at the beginning which were clearly drawn from stock footage in the Columbia library (considerable as Jason archaic stock footage for the attack at the beginning and Sinbad for the longshot of the ship passing in the fog. In the latter film its fine distinct as the crew can be seen wearing 18 century sailor garb if one looks carefully) .

As it has been distinguished in previous reviews the soundtrack is in mono and sounds a bit flat. My guess is that, perhaps, Columbia faded a different master for the video version of Mysterious Island or unprejudiced compressed the heck out of it and boosted the bass to fabricate it sound acceptable for video. The sound is quite obedient but Herrmann’s glean is in mono here. It would be nice if Columbia could go befriend to the novel orchestral masters to remix and master this but I’m not distinct if the modern elements are event available.

The extras are quite nice. The Making of Mysterious Island is quite informative as is the vintage “This is Dynamation” featurette included. The photo gallery and theatrical trailers are an improvement over previously issued Harryhausen DVDs. While this isn’t quite up to the quality of, say, the Criterion Jason and The Argonauts laserdisc released a decade ago, it’s an improvement over many of the vintage films being dumped onto the market for DVD.

All told this is a fine proper (although not perfect) package from Columbia and a salubrious misfortune to release vintage films with extras on DVD.

After “JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS”, this has always been one of my common pictures by special effects guru RAY HARRYHAUSEN. The narrative is expansive, the monsters (especially the giant crab) perceive wonderful and HERBERT LOM is incredible as CAPTAIN NEMO (”Contact with my species has always disappointed me”) . The recount and sound on the DVD is most handsome. My only complaint (and its a minor one), is I’m tired of seeing the hour long special “THE HARRYHAUSEN CHRONICLES” as a bonus feature. I deem its on every Harryhausen disc except “JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS”. Its a nice feature (don’t accumulate me irascible) but does it have to be on EVERY DISC? But the movie is what’s most well-known and this is a very savory film given a nice presentation on this DVD. Capture it and be pleased!!!

The Earth has been overrun by aliens. Only a little group remains hidden and free. They hope to go support in time to the cause of the war and prevent it. But the hideout is discovered and all is almost lost when a young, and untrained, woman jumps through the time gate to our exhibit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Returner! Click Here

Although untrained as a soldier, she does know the basics of the mission. An alien ship will fracture and the occupant needs to be killed before it can initiate the invasion. It seems simple enough except that future knowledge is not completely proper. The ship has already crashed and the occupant has been taken away. Now with the abet of a local criminal trying to go straight, she must fight harder than she knows to give humanity a future.

Good action, some nice area twists, and a time paradox or two all combine to invent an old-fashioned site seem novel. I bought this one based on a trailer on another DVD and I was not disappointed. The film is fairly knowing and the hero is wonderfully resourceful, desperate, and caring. Her character does not descend apart as she unravels what is going on and what she must do to cessation it. Worth watching.

I purchased this movie expecting a cheesy film with unpleasant acting like most original Japanese live-action movies. I also expected a movie that borrowed heavily from other movies. But this really wasn’t either one of those movies, at least not more than any other movie out of Hollywood.

Others have already reviewed this movie (girl goes befriend in time to do the human hasten), so I won’t utilize any more time on it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Returner! Click Here

The acting wasn’t dreadful at all, especially Ann Suzuki’s sometimes-serious, sometimes-rebellious character, Milly. The dubbing was also done well — it was actually worth listening to. The CG and special effects were very wonderful and imaginative, contributing to the station. The soundtrack was a runt inconsistent, and some of the camerawork was kind of uncommon, but nothing too distracting.

All in all, this movie stands on its occupy as a obliging sci-fi movie. It won’t compare to older movies by Kurosawa, and it isn’t as refined as many new science fiction movies from the U.S. (although great better than Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla), but it’s level-headed not dreadful by any stretch.

If you’re traditional enough to have seen the “Carry On” movies the first time around, or have watched them on DVD on “oldies night”, (don’t danger, we’re not going to ask your age) you’ll glimpse the resemblance to this laughable acquire on the world’s greatest lover. Slapstick, double entendres and misunderstandings abound, as Heath Ledger tries to absorb the trousers of the legendary lothario without getting a broken encourage in the process.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casanova! Click Here

It takes position in 1753 in Venice, a time when no woman is generous from the charms of Casanova, not even those confined to the convent. Luckily for him he has friends in the upright places and escapes being strung up for debauchery (a gargantuan word which in the movie means that he shakes a lot of bedsprings without the relieve of a marriage license)

After going one conquest too far, his friend the Doge insists that Casanova accumulate married ASAP, or face exile from Venice. Exile is not a possibility, as we learn early in the movie that he has a very excellent reason for sticking around, so marriage it is, and the lady to whom he pledges his troth is not only a virgin, but extremely willing to be wed. In a classic case of poor timing, he then meets the one woman top-notch of his affection, and she turns out to be a cross-dressing (but only when well-known to display a point) feminist writer who hates every bone in his body. She unfortunately is betrothed to a burly but very wealthy lard merchant (Oliver Platt) whom she has never dwelling eyes on before, the union having being arranged by her tedious father as an insurance policy for the family fortune.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casanova! Click Here

If you’re composed with me after all that, things score even more complicated when Jeremy Irons shows up as Inquisitor Pucci, out for the bewigged head of Casanova as a gift for the hangman’s noose.

The distinguished thing is not to attempt to purchase this movie seriously as a period allotment, or as a true chronicle of the life of Casanova. It is a historically residence spoof of the life and especially the times of Casanova and should be taken with a pinch of salt – or was that lard?

Amanda Richards, July 10, 2006

This is the first of Hallstrom’s films that I’ve seen, and I procure it’s by no means typical of his unusual work. However, I found it immensely engaging. It bears limited reference to the Chevalier de Seingalt’s life, but once you’ve got over that (ideally before you eye it) it is highly luscious. The imaginative and lustrous photography of a Venice peopled with the colourful characters and costumes of the ridotto in the city’s heyday makes the film worth seeing for that alone. Venice should always inspect this good; its inhabitants should always wear the costume of this period.

Then the acting is reliable and plausible. I spent some time trying to work out who it was that Heath Ledger reminded me of, and eventually realised that it was Russell Crowe, not so worthy in looks as something about his manner. Jeremy Irons is hilarious and others well up to par. The film was well-paced, building to a silly finale.

I contemplate the colossal point is to retract that the whole thing was clearly conceived as a sort of Commedia dell’Arte, knockabout farce with very slight sex but plenty of misunderstandings, unsuitable identities and laugh-out-loud moments. And, of course, admire. I plan it was made in very grand the manner that operas like The Marriage of Figaro or The Barber of Seville would have been conceived and performed in when they first came out – in fact it shed fresh light on those for me.

Not a sizable film – it’s a bit too tiny for that – but a marvelous, well-made, highly delicious romp.

I can’t even rationalize giving it 1 star because that implies it got 1/5 of “something” while I can’t study that it did anything apt, except area up a lucrative platform to begin millions of “fanfare” junk to market to kids i.e. numerous video games, coloring books, clothing, pc software, and soundtracks all appear when typing in Shark Sage on amazon’s search.

After watching it with my essential other, we pondered off and on for about 24 hours trying desperately to consider of a worse movie that we have seen. Calm none have near to mind.

This movie plays off of every stereotype I can judge of. The “chilly” shaded guy who raps and dances, the white guy that can’t dance or doesn’t know any frosty hand shakes, the jamaicans that are tiresome, the italians that are mobsters, the white chick that is meek….and finally the unintended, me, the viewer that wants to puke. If my kids were subjected to this I would have a lot of explaining to do to dispell all the stereotypes that are maximized in this movie, ok that trivializes what my role of a parent would be if they were subjected to this…if I had taken any kid to study this movie I would have left early, which isn’t an easy task with kids.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Shark Tale! Click Here

This movie shamelessly plugged so many consumer products I felt like I was sitting through one mammoth commercial, Gup instead of Gap, Guppy Kremes instead of Kristpy Kremes, Coral Cola instead of Coka Cola to name a few mock products which are clear advertisements for the accurate product due to the likeness in trademarks. Method to target that young market, corporate whores!

Also the true of ths narrative seemed to be if you screw up about a hundred times, some chick will back you out, then you can screw over that chick about a hundred times, lie to the entire community, and in the waste everyone will like you any plot and the chick will arrive attend to you if you lift her balloons. Gracious MESSAGE FOR ALL!!

Oscar (Smith) the fish leads a normal life. He is fair an average guy working at the Whale Wash. One day, he wanders into shark territory and is chased by Frankie. Unfortunately for Frankie, the wobble ends in his death, not at Oscar’s hands, but by pure accident. Oscar sees as an opportunity to “be someone”, and snappy takes the credit. The fish world begins to call him the “Shark Slayer”, two female fish initiate to exhibit their interest, and the shark godfather (DeNiro) makes it his business to glean the murderer of Frankie…his son.

“Shark Memoir” is yet another challenging movie that will appeal to both children and adults. The incompatibility is, this time it almost seems made for adults first and kids second. The most determined references are to “The Godfather” and “Goodfellas”, two movies that no kids should have seen. Also, advertising placement has rush amok in this movie. Every design you turn in the city, there are definite “fallacious ads” for true products that is very distracting. Most everything in this movie is overkill, in fact.

The inform talents are credible and the animation is pleasurable, although I found Oscar to ogle kind of creepy with his reach human-looking face. “Shark Narrative” also is nothing like “Finding Nemo”, which is both superb and abominable. Great, because it is not retreading material that is not too weak yet. Unpleasant, because “Finding Nemo” was so worthy better. “Shark Chronicle” is a decent movie that will be enjoyed by most, and I did laugh a number of times while viewing it, but my advice is to wait for DVD.

…Kubrik masterminded Dr. Strangelove, loosely basing the movie upon the book “Red Alert” (the book is a completely serious Cool War nuclear war scenario, but Strangelove is a complete and total farce) . “Strangelove” came out a year or two after the Cuban October missile crisis, a year after US President John Kennedy was assassinated as well as 2 other contemporaneous films, the gleaming and paranoid “The Manchurian Candidate” and the serious treatment of the same book, “Fail Suitable.”

Kubrik originally plot out to do a serious treatment of the book. But Kubrik found as he tried to manufacture the screenplay that he kept running into scenes that he ended up writing as satire. Recognizing the challenge, Kubrik enlisted the talents of one of the best comedic screenwriters in Hollywood, Terry Southern, to do the screenplay.

Casting the film was share genius and share hit-and-miss overjoyed accident. … Somehow Slim Pickens’ name came up and Pickens current the role of the B-52 bomber pilot. Even more ironic yet, Slim Pickens was more conservative than Dan Blocker, but Pickens never caught on during the film’s production that Dr. Strangelove was a comedy, worthy less a satire and a farce unsympathetic to the official propaganda of the cool war.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove! Click Here

In of itself, it was a amusing master stroke telling Pickens play the role seriously. Pickens was apparently no grand wit, so Kubrik was able to withhold Pickens completely unaware that Pickens was actually playing in a comedy, not a serious war movie (one can only hold that the humor of the state was not lost on the other cast members, including James Earl Jones who played Capt. Kong’s bombardier.. “Don’t remark Slim this is all a mountainous joke, we have to let him judge this is a steady war movie.” ) .

Other than Peter Sellers’ roles, George C. Scott (later in “Patton”) and Obliging Hayden delivered memorable performances. Both were obviously instructed to play their roles “over the top.” Kubrik instructed Scott to overact the role of the cigar-smoking, gut-slapping, martini-drinking & womanizing General Buck Turgidson (glean it? Turgid-son? ) . In the scene in the war room where Turgidson exuberantly proclaims the spectacle of a B-52 bomber evading radar by hedge-hopping, Kubrik instructed George C. Scott to deliberately overact the allotment. Kubrik had Scott re-take the scene several times, asking Scott to acquire it even more over-the-top than before. On the last acquire of that scene, Scott practically performed it as a burlesque parody, which was of course, the final rob that Kubrik actually weak.

Sterling Hayden delivered a bright performance as the psychotic Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, the Air Force general who unilaterally orders the nuclear strike against the USSR. The confusion of Frosty War paranoia, paranoid psychosis and fraudulent sexual power in Hayden’s scenes is the blackest of dismal satire. Totally over the top, ludicrous and frightenlingly possible (what if one of your top military brass really went insane and over-rode all the safe-guards against nuclear war? ) . The insane babblings of General Ripper plot the film’s direction and act as its centerpiece, delivering both Kubrik’s satire of anti-communist propaganda and the air of impossible odds for the rest of the film’s characters to overcome that they might somehow avert doomsday.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove! Click Here

Peter Seller’s performances as the President, the British officer and Dr. Strangelove (a left-over Nazi scientist) are memorable, Sellers delivers the title role as the deranged wheelchair-bound Nazi scientist who suffers from involuntary palsied “Seig Hiels!” in his apt arm. Again sex is the valid underlying motive to yet another character and the opportunities for a sexually prodigious post-apocalyptic eugenic world brings the deranged Strangelove to a frenzied outburst of libidinal energy: “Mein Fuhrer! I can vwalk!” But as noteworthy as I savor Sellers’ roles, they seem overshadowed by the rest of the film’s characters. P>It comes probably of no surprise that the U.S. Air Force refused to attend Kubrik in shooting the movie. Having to choice, Kubrik had to resort to mocking up the B-52 flying scenes and bomber interior cabin scenes as best he could (the bomber interior was apparently such a respectable replica of the genuine thing that the FBI launched an investigation into who gave Kubrik such a detailed layout of a B-52’s flight deck) . Appropriately, the exterior B-52 flying scenes contain a funny flaw if you sight closely enough: In one scene, as the damaged bomber hedge-hops across the Siberian taiga (northern boreal forest), you can eye that the underlying shadow of the plane is actually that of a four-engine propellor aircraft and doesn’t match the profile of the overlaid B-52 model.

Suffice it to say, when the movie came out, it was not universally received or even widely understood. It was drummed by political commentators and movie reviewers who found it to be tasteless and sophomoric. The studio was very concerned about the potential a negative backlash from its release (deem that in the same year, the Manchurian Candidate was withdrawn from theaters after Kennedy was assassinated) . An internal memo described Dr. Strangelove as “a immense, sick malefic joke” and questioned the wisdom of even releasing the movie at all. After all, the movie starts off with B-52’s and tanker planes copulating during mid-flight refuelings, displays Air Force “Peace is Our Profession” billboards in the midst of a fire fight between the US Army and Air Force security, depicts two Air Force generals as complete sex-obsessed baffoons, one a psychotic and the other a braying ass, delivers a deranged Nazi scientist and finally a cowboy pilot bucking the biggest phallic bronco of his career (never mind blowing up the world) .

I can assume of few other films whose film makers so defied convention and created a sage that really turned old wisdom on its head. Dr. Strangelove keeps coming at you as one unfavorable scene after another, interspersed with segments of complete straight-faced dead-pan, piling them all on until the fateful kill. When Pickins died in 1983, CBS news anchor Dan Rather delivered the obituary replete with the out buy of Pickins riding the bomb (Perhaps DeForest Kelley topped that and made estimable on his threat to have “He’s dreary, Jim” engraved on his tombstone….) .

There are some things you unprejudiced can’t live down: Being the face that gets a large closing falling scene that leads to the waste of all life on Earth happens to be one of those things. Dreadful Slim, he’s probably suffering in a purgatory of a Liberal Methodist heaven.

In closing, I have to agree with that long-forgotten studio executive who wrote in the memo: Dr. Strangelove *IS* a astronomical, sick malefic joke. But it is one of the finest mountainous, sick malefic jokes ever created, and stands as a film masterpiece. Those who extoll the virtues of this fil

I doubt that you could imagine how great it would distress me to give a single-star rating to an edition of the film I mediate to be the singular greatest contribution to the motion recount. However, the original “40th Anniversary” edition of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To End Worrying And Fancy The Bomb is, unquestionably, requiring of such a rating. Why?, you ask.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove! Click Here

Because about fifteen to twenty percent of the mask image has been removed!!!

If you recall a spy, you will survey that this unusual “Special” edition of Dr. Strangelove is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This, as you can gather from examining older editions of the film, is the first time the film has ever been presented in such a manner. The reason why (and you may cross-check this with the Internet Movie Database [IMDb] or any book on Stanley Kubrick worth its salt) is because Dr. Strangelove was NOT FILMED in 1.66:1. It was technically filmed with a varying aspect ratio (the reasons for which are peaceful not fully explicated, as far as I’ve seen), but, in general, it was filmed in about 1.33:1.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove! Click Here

So, you ask, how does a film shot in 1.33:1 salvage presented in 1.66:1? Did someone return to the novel negative and explain material previously hidden from behold, lost on every print and VHS, Beta, laserdisc and DVD copy heretofore released?

NO!

They simply slit off the top and bottom of the cloak!!!

Such things are not unprecedented. An extremely similar case is the so-called “panoramic” Gone With The Wind. The film, made in 1939 (before there was anything BUT 1.33:1, the “Academy” aspect ratio), when released in the Panavision/Technorama age of the mid-1960’s was similar chopped and changed to magically become 2.35:1. This edition was released on video and DVD a few times before, finally, it was restored to its current 1.33:1 glory.

Stanley Kubrick was absolutely illustrious for his perfectionism and auteur station in the film industry, and I cannot have that a company proposing to release a definitive “Special” edition of his greatest masterpiece would be so heartless as to unnecessarily delete a profitable fraction of the shroud.

Please avoid this unique, bastardized Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Terminate Worrying And Like The Bomb. While the few unusual extras thereon are of interest, they can easily be seen via rental from the local video store, as suplemental to the last “Special Edition” of the DVD (which, incidentally, clearly states on the assist that it is “Presented in the modern aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1″.

Thank you,

Marc-David Jacobs

P.S. For those of you involved in seeing the dreadful editing job for yourselves, feel free to go out and rent the modern edition and the previous edition and go to seven minutes and forty-eight seconds, which is the outrageous tight shot of the B-52’s CRM-114 decoder book. As you will eye, an entire line of text on the top, and about one-and-a-half on the bottom are not completely missing.

A movie spin-off, to TV, normally is not going to be any righteous. Luckily that is not the case here.

This exhibit takes area after T2, and follows John and Sarah as they try and survive and retain a outrageous profile, while avoiding terminators.

One day something happens, they are spotted, and they meet a recent terminator, sent support in time by John. This terminator is to protect John, this terminator is played by the elegant Summer Glau.

This note is explosive and blooming enormous budget. The special effects notice really valid, the fight scenes are unbelievable, and the prove has a delicate generous cast. The guest stars are really apt too.

After you rep to episode 4, the explain starts getting even better, it settles into more of a series feel. The first 2-3 episodes feel more like a astronomical movie, then it gets into series territory, and it does a top-notch job.

What I did first was set in my terminator blu-ray and watched it, followed by T2. I forgot how safe these movies were, and how awesome Arnold was. When I watched the first episode of SCC I wasn’t certain how this point to was going to play out, would it be John and Sarah on the race, trying to avoid Terminators, or would it be something else? Luckily it is something else, but also some running, the indicate surprised me, and went places I didn’t reflect they would go, and they do a very noble job doing it. This is a magnificent estimable series, unlike the guy below me, please belief more episodes, try and compose it to at least episode 5, by then you should be twisted!

The video quality is really ample. I’m impressed. The audio is improbable. I cherish the menus, and the indicate has some fair cold special features. I sat down and watched this in no time flat, took maybe 6-7 hours, it flows easily, and is worth watching no doubt.

It is dark the present only has 9 episodes this season, but the 9 episodes are graceful profitable. Some of the cast you will seek from “The Shield”, “The Wire”, “90210 – The Current One” and “Firefly”, “The Unit”, “The 4400″ and the movie “Serenity”

The acting is tremendous, Summer will send chills down your spine when you opinion the episode where she is practicing ballerina lessons.

This is a huge demonstrate, I highly recommend it, and cannot wait for season 2 to commence airing!

I must say I didn’t examine too worthy at first. What is there to bellow that hasn’t been said before in the movies? And how do you fabricate more than a couple of episodes about a mom trying to protect her son from human-like robots?

Man, was I noxious.

Of course there are Terminators all over the dwelling and they are constantly being destroyed and procure encourage up and what not again and again but that’s what the anecdote is about.

In short, for those who don’t know: Sarah and her son want to end the computer network Skynet to avoid a future Armageddon. They gain relieve from a sexy fem-bot: Cameron Phillips.

The trio is being chased by the FBI who doesn’t know that the Connors are the reliable guys and by the machines whose existence is at stake.

It’s fun to explore (if you maintain in mind that most of the shot people are in fact robots…)

Lena Headey does a terrific job as Sarah. She is convincing as a caring mother, but she also manages the action very well and even looks convincing when others consider she’s insane. (Sorry fans, but I didn’t mediate Linda Hamilton ever pulled that off. She looked insane all moral but for the rest …)

Summer Glau as the protective Terminator is comic. The plot she moves and reacts to emotional (and other) outbreaks always perform me laugh.

Some SciFi critics contemplate Thomas Dekker too archaic for his role as John but I never had a plight with that. He is a terrific actor in his absorb honest (as he already showed us in Heroes) and fits perfectly in the memoir.

Richard T. Jones is very qualified as the FBI agent who senses there is considerable more unhurried all this.

If you don’t rob this all too seriously (who does? ) you’re in for a walk.

Of course I would have wanted more episodes in this season but because of the writers strike there are none. Well, less is more. Better this arrangement than having a few more but written by amateurs.

Blu-ray is site of the art. Also the extras are nice to contemplate. Of course there’s a making of with interviews of the producers and writers etc. but what I really liked were the audition tapes of all the leading actors and the dance practice of Summer Glau.

There is no other film on the subject of art that is better than this one in my view. Irving Stone’s best-seller was a stout read, but in this case the film is better than the book. It centers on the creation of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and the contentious but invigorating relationship between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II; one drove the other “to complete his work”, and even their verbal battles were productive. It is about the courage of putting one’s vision into reality, the hard work, and the faith in one’s self and in God.

The script by Irving Stone and Philip Dunne is fabulous; the words waddle like sweet wine and there is not a single unnecessary scene, or rarely one that is not meaningful. The direction by Carol Reed is meticulous, the cinematography by Leon Shamroy a marvel, and the gain by Alex North adds grand to the film. The costuming and sets are lavish for the papal quarters and the Medici household, and give one a sense of 16th century Rome, and the depictions of the fresco painting technique is arresting and educational.

Charlton Heston, gaunt and bearded, is bright as Michelangelo, as is Rex Harrison as the warrior pope. The interactions of these two actors is riveting, and the dialogue between them worth hearing repeatedly. Others of tag in the cast include Diane Cilento as the Contessina de Medici, Harry Andrews as Bramante, and Tomas Milian as Raphael (the most eminent papal portrait I know of is by Raphael, of Pope Julian II) .

Though Stone’s book and script capture considerable artistic license, there is also a obedient deal of accuracy. This period of 16th century Italy was one of the most interesting in all world history, and Pope Julius II was not only one of its greatest art patrons, but also an improbable man.

This is a film that moves me to tears with its beauty, and brightens my mind with its words. If you are fervent in the artistic process, don’t miss this resplendent film.

The film includes a Prologue, a mini-documentary of modern-day Rome and Florence, which traces Michelangelo’s life, from his birth in Tuscany in 1475, showing his many wondrous works, including an early sculpture he did at the age of 15, through his death in 1564. Total running time is 139 minutes.

I’ll leave the artistic merits of this movie for others to argue over. Suffice it to say that it moves at a slow budge, and that the two main actors (Heston and Harrison) catch turns mugging, gnashing their teeth and chewing the elegant scenery. However, since Amazon’s product listing doesn’t list the technical specs, here they are:

This DVD release of THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY was made from the new 65mm Todd-AO negative, digitally restored. Aspect ratio is moral at 2.20:1, anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. The colors are deeply saturated, and the portray looks quite titillating, with minute grain on my high-end Sony HDTV CRT.

The available soundtracks (all Dolby Digital) are 1.0 mono English, 2.0 stereo English, 1.0 mono French and 1.0 mono Spanish. (Contrary to what another reviewer here says, there is NO 5.1 surround soundtrack — a sorry deficiency for a film originally released in 6-track.) IMPORTANT: On my copy of the disc, the DEFAULT soundtrack is the 1.0 mono English. There is no separate menu for selecting the audio you want, so you must press the AUDIO button on your DVD remote ONCE to collect the 2.0 stereo English soundtrack. You’d consider Fox would want people to hear the stereo track by default!

The honorable news is that the 2.0 stereo track is very orderly, with the fresh 5-channel hide spread and directional dialogue faithfully preserved. It’s not as corpulent and crisp as a fresh soundtrack, but remember that this was recorded forty years ago. If you listen with headphones, it’s easy to hear how great of the dialog was re-recorded on a dubbing stage. In a few intimate scenes, though, the whirring of the camera is faintly audible.

Alex North’s find has some nifty stereo effects, even if the title theme is disturbingly reminiscent of Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra.

The disc includes the complete roadshow presentation: modern-day introduction (with sparkling aerial photography and closeups of Michelangelo masterpieces), intermission music, entr’acte music and exit music. There is also a demonstration of the 65mm restoration process, and some trailers of other Fox epics from the 50s and 60s, including THE ROBE and THE BIBLE. (None of these extras are mentioned anywhere on the packaging.)

If you’re hoping to bask in the grandeur of the 60s widescreen epics, this disc will not disappoint.

If you are fair a microscopic bit lucky in life and in admire someone will contemplate of you as a “Venus” or a “David” (as in Michelangelo) . And for better or worse Maurice (a terrific, sensitive, thoughtful performance by Peter O’Toole) feels this plot about a young woman Jessie (Jodie Whittaker in a strong debut) . And though at first Jessie resists the friendship and mentorship of Maurice she soon realizes that this man who offers his fancy and companionship, wants her in as selfless a manner as possible. Maurice is attracted to the youth, vigor and life in Jessie and she is attracted to his unbiased slightly more than platonic attraction to her. Both Maurice and Jesse have agendas but they are not hidden as is usually the case in this type of lopsided relationship. Both are unabashedly upfront and without pretense.

Director Roger Michell and particularly writer Hanif Kureishi (”My Fine Launderette”) are tackling some critical ideas here: slightly more advanced platonic cherish (oddly stated but nothing is really clear-cut in this film), how we as a society tend to discard the over 60 generation, the possibility of physical adore after 60 or 70, how the keen and physical treasure between young people often matures into deep friendship and respect but sometimes doesn’t and more importantly how our friends can ease our path into dilapidated age.

Of special effect here are the extraordinary scenes between O’Toole and Vanessa Redgrave as his ex-wife and mother of his children. There is a palpable longing and regret in these scenes: these two know each other as no one else does and despite this they appreciate each other with that special kind of esteem reserved for people who have seen and experienced each other’s worst self.

“Venus” is a noteworthy film about loss, appreciate and about the possibilities of life after 40…if not 60, 70 and 80. Maurice adamantly refuses to “go gently into that proper night” without a fight, a slug of Scotch, a bracing cup of Tea and a lustrous wink to a resplendent girl.

The healing power of beauty is ageless. ‘Venus’ takes this theme all the scheme to the curtain call in the life of Morris Russell (Peter O’Toole) . As a famed actor at the sunset of his life and career, his memory and desire are for beauty. This desire is rekindled when he meets his friend, Ian’s, (Leslie Phillips) niece. Jessie (Jodie Whittaker), becomes for him that Venus, the ideal of female beauty. For the film to work and acquire its credibility, the mutual affection would have to suspend our disbelief. At first she ignores him as a slow, faded codger–to the point of rudeness. That’s realistic enough. But she does not merely reawaken his desire for feminine beauty that was at its zenith when he was a fair young actor, he does for Venus what she desires. She wishes to be admired. Added to that his wit and charm, and he’s the alternative to the limitations of virile–yet callow–youth. Besides they seldom know Shakespeare’s sonnets, let alone are able to passionately quote them like he does. Theirs is a mutual scheme. He spends money and time with her, and she gives him a marginal amount of spot to bask in her youthful effervescence. Each brings a measure of sweetness the other lacks. (”Do you have in anything, Morris? ” she asks. “Pleasure, I like,” he replies, “I like to give pleasure.”)

Indeed, when she doesn’t display to be genuine, there’s mild grand for him to lean upon. Ian provides more than a commiserating “Grumpier Primitive Men” companionship. They both piece the rage, laughter, and angst of life’s final chapters. Their jokes produce the film droll without detouring into cheap, dirty-old men routines. The humor only brings about our sympathy. Heartwarming and sadly comic, the friendship is as enduring as his legacy. (When he has a prostate operation, Ian asks why he didn’t impart him. “I loathe sympathy,” he says. “You wouldn’t have gotten any from me,” Ian counters. “I know, you’re a upright friend,” Morris replies.) Then, when Jessie isn’t available, she stirs enough of his believe desirability to rekindle an stale flame. Valerie, played with realistic zest by Vanessa Redgrave, provides the power of adore and forgiveness to ferment the mix.

Between O’Toole’s Oscar nominated performance, and a anecdote that makes the seemingly impossible valid, `Venus’ makes the whole exchange believable currency. ‘Venus’ does for romance what ‘Rocky Balboa’ did for boxing. It can be said that our youth and beauty worshipping culture often misses the boat and overlooks the wisdom and experience of the customary. `Venus’ reminds us of what it is like to be insist and romantic, a lesson account in itself.

Ben Affleck has written (with Aaron Stockard) a top-notch screenplay adaptation of Dennis Lahane’s fresh GONE BABY GONE and has proceeded to deny this tough account with an ensemble cast of both eminent actors and unknown actors and walk-ons from the streets of the Boston spot where they unpleasant yarn takes dwelling. The result is a film so well tuned and realistic with a perfect sense of pacing and character development that it becomes a powerful calling card for Ben Affleck’s career as a director. That it is going unnoticed (with the exception of Amy Ryan’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress) by the Oscars is a grave oversight!

The time is contemporary Dorchester, Massachusetts and Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and his girlfriend/partner Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan), become aware of a missing child Amanda (Madeline O’Brien) in their possess neighborhood. The child’s aunt Bea (Amy Madigan) and uncle Lionel (Titus Welliver), unable to cope with Amanda’s drugged out mother Helene (Amy Ryan), knock on Patrick and Angie’s door, pleading with them to serve score Amanda: Patrick and Angie are private detectives who impartial happen to be an integral portion of the neighborhood. Reluctant at first to become eager in the now 3-day police hunt for the child, a hunt headed by the respected Captain Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman) who his lost his contain daughter in similar circumstances and detectives Remy Bressant (Ed Harris) and Gash Poole (John Ashton) and who as a triad feel they are competent to handle the case without the ‘immature experience’ of the young couple. But Patrick and Angie do become alive to, inform leads within the neighborhood that lead to the clues slow the missing child incident and in doing so, unravel a lot of corruption within the police force, and also behold differences between themselves that threaten their otherwise halt relationship. To say more would steal the extraordinary tension this chronicle maintains all the diagram to the fadeout credits.

The cast is uniformly gracious, from the smallest roles to the most major ones. It is difficult to single out any performer for praise as this is truly an ensemble section. The flavor of the film is impartial, unflinching, and refuses to ignore the grotesque incidents that must be shown for the movie to hold its impact. Writer Dennis Lahane (’Mystic River’, ‘Shutter Island’) is a master of detailing the spectrum of responses that repulsive matters induce: even the most apt of intentions have their black side. Affleck finds all of this in this wonderful film, a film so strong that it easily bears repeated viewings. Highly recommended…but not for the squeamish. Grady Harp, February 08

I’m going to be unprejudiced, I really wasn’t overly exited to view “Gone Baby Gone.” From the previews, it looked like a competent–if familiar–genre relate. I was galvanized, finally, to ogle the film based on Amy Ryan’s practical sweep of the award season’s Best Supporting Actress Prizes. The Affleck brothers, Ben as Director and Casey as Star, did nothing to alleviate my cramped expectations. But something quite unexpected happened–my plan completely changed as I was caught up in the twists of this genuinely satisfactory sleeper. Ben Affleck has generated a brisk, tough and uncompromising film and Casey Affleck has turned himself into a bona fide leading man! And although not a flawless film, I ended up loving “Gone Baby Gone.”

When a child goes missing, the community of Dorchester gets caught in a media frenzy. With Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris as officials in charge of the investigation, Casey Affleck (as a local detective) is brought in by the family as additional attend. Having been raised in the region, it is felt that these contacts may give him better access to and communication with the tightlipped Boston neighborhood. Immediately, the sage starts to unravel and the sympathetic mother (Amy Ryan) turns out to be not so sympathetic. The route the film follows takes us to some familiar territory but also to unchartered waters. The film dares to raise true and ethical questions and presents a terrific and thoroughly uncompromising ending! The film’s final moments do this head and shoulders above archaic Hollywood product. And I give Ben Affleck tubby credit for not bending to a more stereotypical conclusion.

“Gone Baby Gone” is actually the fourth in a series of novels by crime writer Dennis Lehane featuring private detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. It is, however, the first to be treated to a ample hide adaptation. Those familiar with the novels know that the Kenzie/Gennaro dynamic provides considerable emotion and conflict. Their relationship is almost as primary as any case that they work. Fans of this aspect of Lehane’s novels, therefore, might be a bit disappointed. In making this stand-alone film, Gennaro is largely marginalized and the impact of what happens to them as a couple isn’t as famous to the record as it is in the book. That said, film and novels are two different mediums and “Gone Baby Gone” as a film quiet works exceedingly well in its hold upright.

Casey Affleck is not the mature actor one would describe for this role. Microscopic in stature, relaxed in delivery–his offbeat presence actually makes “Gone Baby Gone” even more titillating. As he is not a predictable “leading man,” you’re never quite clear what he’s going to do. I found this lack of expectation to be quite invigorating and led me to rep and luxuriate in the twists of the film to a greater degree. With “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” this was Casey’s year to redefine himself. Freeman, Harris, Ryan, Amy Madigan, and Michelle Monaghan (as Gennaro) all give impassioned performances. With a tight script and solid direction, “Gone Baby Gone” is a surprisingly tough film–and I mean that in all the best ways. Highly recommended. KGHarris, 01/08.
